Colombia, en la mira de un gigante de la logística

United Parcel Service, más conocida como UPS, tiene dentro de su estrategia para Colombia y la región aprovechar el crecimiento de la industria médica, drogas especiales, dispositivos médicos y logística en el manejo de desarrollo de laboratorios científicos.

Según la compañía, las ventas en los próximos 5 años de drogas y dispositivos médicos en la región subirán 9 por ciento. Afirman que Colombia y México vivirán un crecimiento en esta industriaimpulsados por el turismo médico.

Con sede en Atlanta, una operación en más de 220 países, la entrega de más de 18 millones de paquetes diarios y unos ingresos globales que para el 2014 fueron de 58.200 millones de dólares (basado en un volumen total anual de 4.600 millones de paquetes y documentos transportados), la firma hace presencia en el país desde 1989.

Brinda servicios a través de UPS Colombia, UPS Air Cargo, UPS Supply Chain Solutions, UPS Servicios Expresos S. A. S. y UPS Brokerage, y tiene más de 560 centros de acceso, incluyendo mostradores y centros de servicio.

Francisco Ricaurte, gerente general de UPS en Colombia, dijo que en el país están observando detenidamente las tendencias de consumo, como el comercio electrónico, en el que ven un potencial de crecimiento a medida que la población adopta la tecnología digital, como teléfonos inteligentes, y tabletas para hacer compras.

“Actualmente, estamos evaluando las condiciones del mercado para determinar las mejores oportunidades de crecimiento para nuestra empresa, y para los clientes actuales y futuros”, señaló Ricaurte.

Y agregó que hoy en día cuentan con una plantilla de más de 400 empleados (de los 435.000 que tiene UPS a nivel mundial), más de 500 puntos de acceso, servicios de corretaje y aeropuertos en funcionamiento en Bogotá, Medellín, Cali y Barranquilla.

Frente al negocio de embarque y logística en el país, el gerente de UPS sostuvo que, según el Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI), el PIB de Colombia se prevé que crezca un 3,7 por ciento en el 2016, en comparación con el 3,4 por ciento del 2015.

“Si el país sigue mejorando su infraestructura y los asuntos de gobierno y progresan los acuerdos comerciales, creará rendimientos positivos en su entorno empresarial. Esos son solo unos indicadores económicos que señalan el crecimiento y las oportunidades, no solo para los proveedores de logística, sino para todas las empresas”, advirtió Ricaurte.

Desde que UPS comenzó a operar en Colombia y en América Latina, añadió, se han tomado medidas estratégicas para invertir en infraestructura para atender las demandas de los clientes y hecho una serie de adquisiciones que han fortalecido su portafolio.
